A Note to the Truly Disillusioned

We feel your pain honestly we do. You think Obama’s cool, but you aren’t convinced. You don’t have the “fever” and it’s not because you haven’t heard the man speak. In fact you don’t see him as an idealist at all and consider him more to the right than you’d like. You’ve attempted to discuss your concerns with people, but you’re accused of being a “crab in a barrel” rather than a “thinker in the room.” What really bothers you is that people go on and on about your duty to vote for a black man and then when you start to make observations about his racial/ethnic background, you’re told that you shouldn’t be focusing so much on his race. We know. It’s frustrating.
Then people assume that you MUST be voting for Hillary. You’re undecided on her as well for a different set of reasons. She’s fine and all, but you aren’t moved. In addition to other concerns, you look at the mess that is the American political, economic and social landscape and you understand that the time she’ll need to make change will largely be taken up with defending herself from and treading through backlash.
You want to scream! Everyone is going on ad nauseam about change and it being a “new day” in politics, but the Dennis Kucinich/Ron Paul runoff you wanted was never possible. In fact, you just see the same old shit. There are NO third party candidates running and you realize how much of a façade your independent voting status can be. You were hoping there’d be a major candidate who was against the death penalty or who actually wasn’t part of the religious American majority. No such luck. Perhaps you’re a single person who doesn’t think you should have to produce offspring to get a tax break, especially since you’re paying more than your fair share to house other people’s children in schools and prison. Long sigh. You’ve accepted the fact that millions of dollars are required to run a successful presidential campaign, but are tired of seeing how many more millions are “needed” to keep a candidate viable.
You feel disgusted with and detached from the entire process and are only considering voting as an ode to the people who gave their lives decades ago and the ones who had their votes snatched as recently as the last presidential election.
Onyx Cranium feels you. Trust! Still, we encourage you to cast as informed a vote as possible whenever you have the opportunity. You always have the option of politically checking out, but it’s better that you don’t. Remember that navigating through an increasingly volatile landscape isn’t any easier simply because you have your eyes closed.
That’s the theory anyway.
